Service

Website Development

Design and development of responsive, accessible websites for businesses and individuals.

What this service covers

A website is usually the first thing a potential customer meets. It has to load quickly on an ordinary phone connection, say clearly what the business does, and make the next step obvious. That is the whole job.

We build marketing sites, small business sites and content-led sites where the pages are managed through an editor rather than by editing code. Where a website genuinely is the wrong answer — because the business needs accounts, permissions or workflow — that is what Custom Web Applications is for.

Why it matters

Problems this solves

A website usually underperforms for one of these reasons. Whichever applies, the fix is a rebuild of the affected part rather than a workaround layered on top.

  • The site loads too slowly

Visitors leave before the page appears, especially on mobile data. Slow pages also make search engines give up on the deeper pages.

  • It breaks on a phone

A layout designed for a desktop monitor is unreadable on the screen most people actually arrive with.

  • Nobody can update the content

Every small text change needs a developer, which is slow, expensive and means the site drifts out of date.

  • It is invisible in search

No page titles, no structured data, no sitemap. The pages exist but nothing tells a search engine what they are for.

  • The last build cannot be extended

It was set up for one launch and nothing else. Adding a section later means rebuilding it.

Scope

What you receive

Scope is recorded before build and checked against at the end. Anything not listed is quoted separately rather than quietly assumed.

  • A written scope covering pages, content and functionality, agreed before build
  • Responsive layouts verified from small phones through to large desktops
  • An editor for routine content changes, where the site needs managed content
  • Search foundations: per-page metadata, canonical URLs, sitemap and robots file
  • A performance and accessibility pass before launch
  • Handover documentation covering structure, hosting and how to make changes
  • Source code, with the licence position for any third-party components stated

Capabilities

Features and options

Not every site needs every option. What applies is settled during scoping, and anything deliberately dropped is written down as out of scope.

  • Single page or multi-page

A focused one-page site for a narrow offer, or a structured multi-page site where there is more to explain.

  • Managed content

An editor for pages, images and posts, with permissions so only the right people can change what goes live.

  • Enquiry capture

Forms that validate properly, report failures visibly and reach the right inbox.

  • Search-ready structure

Semantic headings, descriptive link text, canonical URLs and structured data for how the business is presented.

  • Third-party embeds

Maps, booking widgets, chat tools and analytics wired in without compromising load time.

  • Accessible by default

Keyboard operation, contrast and screen-reader labelling treated as part of the build rather than a later fix.

Process

How a project runs

On a website the heavy lifting happens in Discovery and Planning. Content structure, the editor and search foundations are decisions made early — revisiting them after build is far more expensive.

  1. Discovery
  2. Planning
  3. UI/UX
  4. Development
  5. Testing
  6. Deployment and maintenance

Technology

Chosen to fit the requirement

Technology decisions follow the problem being solved. Where a requirement has a trade-off, we explain the options rather than choosing silently.

Questions

Frequently asked

Questions we are commonly asked about website development.

Ask something else
Who writes the content for the site?

Either you supply the finished copy, or we structure and write it from material you provide. That is a scope decision we settle during planning, because it changes the effort involved. Either way, text is agreed before build so layout is designed around real content rather than placeholders.

Will I be able to update the site myself?

For routine changes — editing pages, replacing images, adding posts — yes. You get an editor and a short handover session. Structural changes, or anything that alters how the site behaves, are code work and are quoted separately.

Where will the site be hosted?

Wherever suits the site's needs and your budget. Hosting is an ongoing cost that continues after we finish, and we will explain the options and the trade-offs rather than picking one for you. We can manage it or hand it over to you.

How does this differ from a web application?

A website primarily presents information and captures enquiries. If the business needs user accounts, roles, internal workflow or meaningful data, a Custom Web Application is the right fit. We will tell you honestly which one your project is during the first conversation.

Will the site be found on Google?

We build the technical foundations a search engine needs — metadata, structure, sitemap, robots, speed and mobile layout. That is necessary, not sufficient. Being found for the terms you care about also depends on content, competition and ongoing work, none of which a build alone guarantees.
